Implementation Module

The Implementation Module gives the creator the opportunity to put their plan into action. As the designer of my course, my intentions went in accordance with Fink's 3-Table Column I created, along with Wiggins Understanding by Design (UbD).

  • Record a narrated screen capture video (using Screencast-O-Matic, Camtasia, etc.) that:

  • Shows your course modules and resources.

  • Addresses these points:

    • Where does your Overview/Start Here module fit in the course?

      • The Overview/Start Here module fits into the course at the top of the page to have students recognize where to begin the course.

    • How does your instructional design approach appear in the modules?

      • My instructional design approach appears as form of backwards design. I knew what the students needed to form their Google Site, then I went from there as I designed.

    • Where and how are course goals and outcomes shared with learners?

      • Course goals and outcomes are shared in the Overview/Start Here module in a shared PDF.

    • How do modules align outcomes, activities, and assessments?

      • Fink’s 3 Table Column and BHAG.

    • Is the approach student-centered or teacher-led?

      • Teacher-led.

    • What is the instructor’s role (Presenter, Facilitator, Coach, Mentor)?

      • Facilitator/Teacher-led

    • Is the course blended or fully online?

      • The course is to be fully implemented in the classroom, due to students needing guidance from the teacher. However, the course is blended due to nature of it being completed in the classroom. I do believe though it can shift to being fully online.

    • How do you introduce yourself and build a learning community?

      • I introduce myself in a “Welcome” video.

      • Promoting Capturing Kids Hearts

      • Promoting a Growth Mindset

    • What is the ratio of synchronous to asynchronous activities?

      • 100% Synchronous, however, by the end of the year, the goal is to get them to 20% asynchronous to be more independent.

    • How will you address infrastructure and support needs for learners?

      • I will need to make sure Wi-Fi is reliable with the district technology coordinator.

      • Chromebook cart with 16 Chromebooks is accounted for and charged daily.

Collaborative Discussion Questions and Comments

  • What Learning Management System (LMS) or other digital sharing platforms like Google Docs are you planning to use? Why?:

    • For LMS I’m using Google Classroom due to it is a platform available to our district for free. As for presentation uses, I mostly used Canva.

  • How will you implement the Overview/Introduction/Start Here Module or section of your course including videos, documents, and related resources?

    • I used the Introduction Module to introduce the course overall and what we will be doing during the school year.

  • How will you implement the first 1-2 Modules of your course including videos, documents, and related resources.

    • One module is dedicated to building their Google Sites and going throug the process. I also incorporated YouTube videos for them to review if needed. The videos will also be reviewed in the classroom.

  • How will you use media to support and enhance learning?

    • A lot of the media or videos are there as a guide for the students. Sometimes, I may not explain it in a way that the kids might understand, which is why videos are there for further explanation.

  • Lecture in a digital age? When are lectures appropriate and how can they best be used?

    • Lectures can be used as guides or for reviewing a concept.

  • What are your thoughts regarding apprenticeships in university and online environments?

    • I really like the idea and believe apprenticeships can lead to more career opportunities and advancements for an individual leaning into the instructional design role.

  • "Cognitive overload" is discussed in one of your videos. What are your thoughts on addressing this issue?

    • Cognitive overload can be too much for certain age groups, and even us adults. I know in the past, when I’ve done online assignments for my students, I’ve told them to only certain parts at a time. I know a lot of us have assignments from TpT creators who make assignments on Google Slides. So, what I do is I only make a copy of select slides and split them up into certain parts. For example: Slides 1-5 are Part 1 and Slides 6-10 are Part 2. While it is more to grade, I think it helps to prevent that cognitive overload, which is a term I never thought about up until now.

  • If you have been working as a collaborative team, how do you feel about teaching an online or blended course independently?

    • I feel like I can teach a course online or blended. As teachers, a lot of us taught during COVID, which made us grow in our skills, not hinder. I believe a lot of this program were probably the one’s who were asked by their colleagues on how or what to do in Google Classroom. Just from the experience I’m alsot gathering in this course, I believe I’m able to do either blended or online learning.

  • What standards for professional learning will you need to address as you develop your course?

    • One professional learning standard I see as a need to potentially address is active engagement. I say that only because it is what I want to improve on both in the classroom as a teacher and for professional learning as a facilitator.

Comments from Peers

Katelyn O' Quin: You did a great job! I love how you laid out goals and expectations and tried to answer questions before they were asked. I think the scavenger hunt is valuable. You could maybe even put it in your "Start Here" section since it is one of the first things you want them to do!

Cristy Silkin: I love the scavenger hunt, it's a great way for students to explore the classroom with a purpose. Your students and parents would benefit from the Introduction Module, it gives them a place to start. Just like in our Blackboard, I personally explore all of that for my benefit in understanding the content. Your classroom is well laid out and easy to navigate!

Katelyn O' Quin: I like the idea of chunking assignments in Google slides to make it seem like less for students. I know when I would use seesaw assignments and kids would load up a ton of slides you could hear the air leave the room some times even if they didn't have to do all of them.

Google Classroom Changes and Additions

After viewing my peers’ and their Google Classroom or other LMS, and considering their suggestions, I made some changes and additions. It took me a while to think of ways I can fix my Google Classroom and what can be added. I think as a designer of my own course and even in the classroom, there are so many ways I can go about it, I tend to overthink and overanalyze. However, I then have consider my students and what type of learners I have.

Below are screenshots I decided to implement on this page to show the differences from the recording I made above. I want my audience and others who view my website to consider that after much reflection, I can make changes that can simplify the experience for the learner.
