Usability and Reflection of Instructional Course Design

The usability portion of instructional design allows the audience to test the course the designer created. As the designer of my LMS course, this allows me the opportunity receive feedback from peers, which then allows me the opportunity to reflect on my course.

Video Transcript

Who conducted the usability testing? Were they the ideal testers? Why or why not?

I enlisted two friends to conduct the usability testing. One is a high school teacher venturing into instructional design, while the other teaches first grade and a degree in Instructional Design from TAMUCC. Her insights were particularly valuable. Their feedback was highly informative; both praised my course, but neither fully grasped the complexities of teaching 4th RLA. The high school teacher seemed less informed compared to the first grade teacher. Although both provided positive comments, I identified an area for improvement, which I will elaborate on in the following questions.

How could you improve this in the future?

Conducting usability testing during the summer presented challenges in finding testers. I plan to test this area again with my new students during the upcoming school year. I’m eager to gather feedback, as well as insights from my Reading/Language Arts partner. I also missed an opportunity to consult principal, who has a doctorate and extensive experience in curriculum development, particularly in reading.

How did your platform (LMS, Google Docs, etc.) affect testing and results?

One advantage of Google Classroom is the ability to attach Google Docs to assignments. My testers appreciated being able to view the assignment from a student’s perspective, as teachers often only see it from their own viewpoint. This feedback was invaluable.

What lessons did you learn the feedback?

I learned when the same question or arises repeatedly, it indicates a potential issue. Both testers asked, “Which one is the first module?” Despite my organization and labeling, hadn’t clearly indicated which module was “Module 1” orModule 2.” This feedback highlighted the need for more precise labeling in my course materialsWhat changes did you make to address usability issues? Before creating the Google Classroom, I made several adjustments in the instructional. Moving forward, I will ensure to label Module 1” and “Module 2” to clarity for users.

How did this process improve your course and learner experience?

Creating this course has been a valuable learning experience. I welcome feedback to enhance the online learning journey for my students. For future projects maintaining an open mind in the design process is crucial for growth and improvement.

How did testing affect the alignment of outcomes, activities, and assessment?

The usability testing provided insights into the strengths and weaknesses the alignment between outcomes, activities, and assessments. While the current alignment meets student needs, there’s always room for further refinement.

How will you address infrastructure and support needs for learners?

To support learners, I will encourage a Growth Mindset, both for myself and my students. Listening to feedback is essential for refining my design. I recognize the importance of flexibility regarding deadlines and solutions, especially when technology presents challenges. also plan to provide tutorials and troubleshooting tips to aid students in navigating the course.

Usability Testing Reflection Discussion Board 3

In this portion I've implemented a Usability Testing Reflection link my group and I participated and reflected upon. While we all had different or same experiences for our usability testing, we all have similarities in refining our design. We all learned it is important to always listen to feedback for the refinement.
